3D printing

RUSAL is working with German machine tool developer Sauer GmbH to pioneer new aluminium 3D printing powders and solutions. This collaboration will pave the way for RUSAL to enter the 3D printing market, which is a key target for the future.

The key benefit of 3D printing technology is its ability to make industrial parts of any shape and complexity that cannot be produced using conventional means. With this technology, RUSAL can produce unique prototypes over a very short period of time. The technology is also practically waste-free.

RUSAL is very strong in R&D and manufacturing in aluminium powders, and by combining its efforts with DMG Mori, the largest manufacturer of hybrid 3D additive manufacturing machines in the world, to expand industrial use of the 3D technology, RUSAL hopes to become a leading global player in this sector.

New solutions in cable industry

RUSAL is developing the production of innovative wire rods with innovative aluminium alloys. These wire rods have an increased temperature resistance, giving them around 50% greater power transmission capacity, which makes them ideal for use in electricity grids. RUSAL'S wire rods are also significantly cheaper than their counterparts in the US and Europe.

To this end in 2017, RUSAL launched a rolling mill at Kandalaksha Aluminium Smelter, which will have a full production capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum of valued-added wire products in seven sizes.

RUSAL also set up a joint venture in 2016 with ElkaCable, a Russian cable producer and distributor, to produce oil-submersible cables, flexible cables and displaceable wires as well as self-supporting insulated wires. The project will have a full annual capacity of around 4,300 tonnes
