Russia is second only to China in production of primary aluminium. It produces 15% of the world's alumina and 12% of its aluminium. In terms of light metal exports, Russia is the world leader, exporting 80% of the aluminium produced by Russian smelters.
Russia's aluminium sector is the country's leading industry; it was at the forefront of recovery after Russia's drop in industrial production in the beginning of the 1990s and now operates at full capacity.
